Museums and the History of Sunriver –
Make it a point to get a little educated on the history of Central Oregon while you are visiting. The early days of Sunriver and Central Oregon were filled with volcanic eruptions, cowboys and army men. Did you know that Sunriver was once an army camp? It was a World War II training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment.  By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed. The Officers Club has been preserved and renovated and is now known as Sunriver Resort’s historic Great Hall. The resort you now vacation in came about in 1968 when it was developed by John Gray and Donald V. McCallum. The famous round-a-bouts that everyone gets lost on a few times while visiting here were originally created for the army tanks.

The Sunriver Nature Center is wonderful place to take the kids to do some stargazing in the observatory or to check out the local critters that call Sunriver home.

The Lava Lands Visitor Center is another natural wonder of Central Oregon that is only a few minutes from Sunriver. This volcanic monument is open daily during the summer months (you can hike up the road during the winter months, too). At the top of the look out, you’ll find beds of black lava rock with a view of the entire Oregon cascade mountain range. There is a fire lookout tower that points out which mountains are what. This is a great spot to watch the sun set on the horizon.

Need a little more educating? Make sure to plan a visit to the High Desert Museum, which is one of the top living history museums in the country. The ancient Indian artifacts, the rich history of the old west, along with the real wild animals, like porcupines, bob cats, birds of prey, snakes, scorpions and many other small mammals and insects, makes the High Desert Museum a must-see spot while you are visiting. Don’t forget to flash your Sunset Perks pass which will get everyone in your group a 10% off discount.
